Congrats on the new-to-you boat!!!

New Brunswick is a pretty cool place... lots of good scenery! What areas are you going to be boating in?

Mostly Grand Lake, but also the Saint John River system from Fredericton to Saint John.

any balsa wood in the hull structure of these boats, or just in ceilings?

Welcome aboard. Typically, the hull below water line is solid. About 6" above the waterline, there is a balsa core. I am not 100% sure on the 85's. A moisture meter would be recommended to determine any intrusion. Good luck. 8-) er

so, turns out it's a 1981 santa cruz. no big deal, still an old boat either way.
fuel tank is leaking, and needs to come out. seems like there might be room enough to remove it without cutting deck or removing engine. anyone ever take this on in one of these boats? probably going to replace with a plastic tank.

If you haven't already, you might want to peruse this thread:

viewtopic.php?f=13&t=1228

He took an '80 vintage of that model and did extensive renovation. You're not anticipating anything near that complicated, but some of the pics might give you some ideas and some inspiration.
