How the heck do you repower a 1994 39 Cockpit MY?

Postby tonyiiiafl » March 1st, 2016, 4:07 pm

As I was laying down last night to sleep and thinking of getting HOLODECK down here from Maine in the spring, a thought popped into my head.....how the heck would one pull and replace an engine if it ever needed to happen in this type boat? There is NO straight access into the salon area, it is either up a set of stairs or down a set of stairs. OK, I am ready for any answer anyone can give me. !!!!! :censored:

Through the windows or through the door.
Some disassembly required......
Thanks

Straight out the side - cut a hole big enough for the engines to slide out and then reglass it when the new engines are in. Like you would with an impact repair.

I think it can be done both through the companion way door and through the aft cabin door. I believe going through the aft cabin requires cutting into the wall between the aft cabin and the salon. It's a bit of work but I recall hearing that going through the companion way door isn't as cut and dry either, even with the engine torn down to just the block. I just can't recall if it was a 39 that this related to. Either way, you're dealing with stairs but that's not as bad as gaining a wide enough opening.

I have a 1990 3608. I had to replace the starboard motor. We took the railing off and went through the window. You'll need to strip the motor down (pull oil pan etc). If you want to see pictures or have questions please feel free to email me. It's a job but very doable. Best of luck.

I've done that on a 36, just can't remember on the 39 why I think I've heard through the doors.

Pretty much the answer I anticipated. Does not sound pretty or inexpen$ive. Thanks for the replies!
