I Installed My New VHF

Postby RGrew176 » June 3rd, 2016, 4:45 am

I finally got the time to install my new VHF radio. It is a Standard Horizon GX1700.

I turned the unit on and got into the Setup Menu and programmed in my MMSI number. No if unfortunately something does happen it will broadcast my position and other information so assistance from the Coast Guard or nearby boaters should be more readily available.

After setting up the radio I went to channel 69 and called for a radio check. I got a response that I was heard loud and clear.

I love the built in GPS within a couple of minutes it had my lat/lon posted on the screen. We'll see how it goes. I do plan to buy a new antenna just so both the radio and antenna are new.

Next weeks project is to install my new Garmin GPS.

Nice compact unit, installed the GX1600 unit 2 years ago. Only difference is It does not have the built in GPS. Already had the wiring for the GPS signal from the chart plotter so I elected to save a few $ better spent on :beergood:

Care does need to be taken when entering the mmsi number as you get only 1 try. If you screw up it needs to go back to the factory to be reset which obviously cost shipping 2 ways and a fee from Standard Horizon. This is common to all brands by the way, think it is something to do with antitheft and/or involuntary entry after the fact.

Fortunately they give you 2 chances to put in the number and it has to be the same number I believe both times. I took my time putting the number in and made sure it was the correct number.
