2017 How Much Have You Spent On Your Boat Year To Date

Postby RGrew176 » February 6th, 2017, 3:17 am

I tracked my boating expenses last year. I had never tracked boating related expenses before. It was somewhat interesting to see what I spent on my hobby. Last year I was somewhat limited by my daughters wedding expenses. Hopefully this year I will have more boat bucks to spend on fuel and I can go to a few more places. Hope there are no further repairs but it is a 36 year old boat so we'll see.

I'm going to try it again this year. I am already half way to my last years total and I am about 60 days from launch. I should be getting my invoice for my summer dockage later this month. That will bump up the total a bit.

My spending has started early this year with my transmission repair and such. The marina where I wintered has billed me for all services performed since I paid my winter storage bill last October.

My expenses so far in 2017 are as follows:

Winterize Engine Humbug Marina----------------------------------------290.00
Oil & Filter Change Humbug Marina-------------------------------------164.00
Winterize A/C System Humbug Marina----------------------------------40.00
Shrinkwrap Humbug Marina ---------------------------------------------370.00
Misc Mechanical Parts Humbug Marina-----------------------------------69.30
Transmission Rebuild Humbug Marina----------------------------------2355.18

I can't get past the shrink-wrap cost , man is that cheap.....we pay 2.5 times that,,,my dockage alone is close to your total, but does include the winter storage ,out and in , blocking, reserved parking etc........
The above is strictly my opinion always based on years of doing...remember to support local business , it pays back.

I agree!!

I've been re-using my shrink the last several years because of the cost. Has worked out well, but this year might be the last.

Shrink here runs from $11.00 a foot to $15.00 a foot here in NY. km1125 how do u reuse it? And Kenny have u tried the 3M Cleaner/Wax or Restorer/Wax? Bass Pro brand has the same thing and it's cheaper than 3M. Does the same thing as compound & wax, IMO and u only have to do it once! Mike

Are you saying 3m makes the bass pro item?
Or is it just very similar?
Thanks

Just very similar and less expensive. Its cleaner wax or cleaner wax with more grit in the restorer. Seems to work for me. Mike

I cut the band that was below the swim platform and each band that went under the boat. Put loops in the ends where I cut. Then I rolled the shrink up starting at the stern until I was at the bow. Took a little bit of coaxing to get it off the anchor because of the rod that sticks out on both sides. Took down the 2x4s and banding that was used to support it and put loops on the banding. Also marked 2x4s as to their location.

In the fall I put all the supports back just like they were, using strong cording to extend the banding that I had cut. Then I pulled the rolled up shrink back up on the bow, fit it around the bow like it was the year before, then started unrolling to the stern. Then I knocked the bottom out of the 2x4s so they laid down and went underneath the boat. First I put a ratchet strap on the banding that went all around the base of the shrink that I had cut under the swim platform and put a little tension on it. Then I tied each band under the boat... snug, but not really TOO tight. Then when I stood up all the 2x4's they pulled the shrink pretty tight. Then I readjusted the ratchet strap to be very tight and wrapped it in some scrap shrink so it wouldn't corrode.

This is what it looks like after the 4th or 5th year of doing that. Each year I thought might be the last, but when I put it on it seemed fine for another year. If I had gotten TWO years I would have been just fine! I did buy a roll of shrink tape and have made a few repairs where something poked or rubbed a hole though it.

In the off season I wrap it all up in some clear plastic and then use a vacuum to "shrink" the package and tie it up. It's about 1.5x3x4 feet and small enough to get up the attic hatch in the garage. The first summer was so hot I thought the shrink might have shrunk and be too small to fit the boat again, but it did fit.
