Well that escalated quickly!

Postby Jlubas » June 4th, 2017, 9:41 am

Hey everyone, pretty new to the forum but have really valued the discussion as I found my new to me boat. Late last year I purchased a 1995 355 Aft. Survey went extremely well including seatrial. The boat was located in Scituate MA and we decided to move it Westbrook CT. It is approximately a 135nm trip. Anyways after months of working on her updating etc yesterday was the day. The tanks were about half full so before leaving Scituate Harbor filled up with fresh fuel. Got underway about 7;30 am. I took it really easy on the engines for the first 30 miles or so. Kept it at 10kn to get things moving. Then had about a 45min break as we went through the Cape Cod canal. Hit a little bit of weather 3-4s but she was was running and handeling really well. We cruised for about 6 hours at 16kn engines at about 3200. Decided to pull onto Point Judith to top off fuel as a percaustion. That took about 45 mins so engines had another opportunity to rest a bit as well. We cruised about another 2 hours and then of pf a sudden I noticed the engines were not syncing. My Starboard engine was losing power. I tried to throttle up but got a warning sound. Killed the engine right away and went down to investigate. Started it back up and I could could hear a really bad knocking sound. Almost like a rod knock. I never lost oil pressure and temps stayed consistent all day long. I have power at idle but can hear the knock faintly. Decided to shut down and hump back on one. About an hour from my home port and I lost that one too :banghead: . Just all of a sudden completely died. It would turn over but not start which led me to believe it was a fuel issue. I went below and changed out the fuel filter....nothing. Then realized when I was turning the key to the on position I got no buzzing sound. Previous owner had warned me of this. I changed out the fuel injector relay. Went up the helm and it fired up! Perfect.....well not really. Put it in gear and it died and would not star again. Long story short thank God for unlimited TowBoat US. They got me into my home port safely. So now here I am no idea where to start. Really value everyone's advice and would appreciate any thoughts. The boat has Crusader 454 XLIs. Engines have under 500hrs on them. Also something weird that happened is the blower in the engine room stopped working?!?! Happened when I lost the 2nd engine on the port side. Have since tried to get it on again however nothing. All toggles at them helm are working and lighting up. I switch that one to the on position and nothing. Doesn't even light. Thanks for taking a read about my afternoon from hell. Any thoughts are appreciated.

That's a hell of an afternoon

Fuel, does each engine have only one filter? Seems odd to lose both engines shortly after a fuel stop.
Thanks

I think you also have a flat screen filter.
Maybe do a search for your engine.
I don't know where you would find ity on your boat/engine.
There may be a thread on this site about it too.
I'll see if I can find it.
Thanks

Go to the gas engine section. Fourth topic down. He took his screens out and cleaned them.

My 97 454 EFI have three fuel filters. The pancake, located between the fuel tank and Recor fuel filter, and a filter under the covers of the frame erector. The 97 454 engines are troddle bodies. No sure of the 95? It would seem the EFI would require more than one filter.
