Fuel Usage

I filled my tanks last Wednesday then ran the boat home from Detroit Beach Boat Club a run of 18 miles. Then on Sunday I took my boat out for the last time this season. I made a run around Grosse Ile then filled up at Elba Mar Boat Club. Using the trip odometer of my GPS I ran a total of 36.5 miles (statute) between fill ups. I put in 36.9 gallons of fuel on Sunday.

On this particular tank of fuel I averaged 0.989 MPG on this last run. I ran at RPM's of 3200 to as low as 1600 during that 36.5 mile run. It's really the only time I tracked an individual use of fuel. I did keep track of my total mileage this season and gallons of fuel used so I will have a seasonal average MPG to post later and I tracked my hours run so I will also later post my GPH average.

The numbers should be interesting. Calculating over a whole season should give me a good idea of my average fuel usage.

In $CDN I put in just over $1500 this season. Our marina averaged about $1.15/Litre (includes members discount) this season so that equates to just over 1300 litres (433 US gallons). Between my two operation speeds I average about 10 gallons per hour, average speed of the two is about 10 nm/h. So, I am burning right around 1 gallon / NM.
I still wish our season was longer!!!!

I added $3200 CAD of fuel this year and still have 1/4 tank. I did log almost 1100NM on my GPS and just under 100hrs on my mains. I also put 300hrs on my genny.

Agree completely. Even in the go fast. For some reason people don't believe it.

Some say that fuel is the cheapest part of boating. If you own your boat free and clear then fuel becomes a larger portion of the expense pie. This season I spent $1935.08 on fuel. If I were to remove my transmission repair from my costs this season fuel would be my biggest expense. I paid $1700.00 for my summer dockage. Not sure what my winter storage cost will be as I have not pulled yet.

This year my biggest expense was my transmission rebuild. Next season if I have no further mechanical issues fuel will most likely be my biggest expense. I am tentatively planning my next seasons cruising and it is somewhat ambitious so again with no unplanned mechanical problems fuel could be my biggest expense next season.

For me , I think that , "fuel is the cheapest part of boating", would be ultimately dependant on how how big your boat is and the value of it.
Over the years, for me on a number of boats of different sizes, that approx 1 NMPG number seems to show up over and over....

I'm $8000 per year (including shrink wrap). Annual maintenance/servicing - oil changes (mains and genny), racors, impellers = $2500, other maintenance items $1500. So fuel always ends up cheapest for me.
