Roof caves in as fire engulfs Safe Harbor Toledo Beach Marina
LASALLE, Mich. (WTVG) - A large fire broke out Friday morning at the Safe Harbor Toledo Beach Marina in LaSalle, Michigan.

According to Monroe County dispatch, the call came in around 6:36 a.m.

“We are relieved that all of our employees are safe and we are aware of no injuries,” Safe Harbor Marinas chief resource officer James Phyfe said in a statement. “Our leadership team is at the property managing the situation. We are working closely with first responders and have initiated an investigation into the cause. As soon as we have more information, we will reach out to affected members.”

According to ABC affiliate WXYZ-TV in Detroit, the roof of the building caved in while the walls were collapsing. There is no official word on damage, including how many boats were being stored in the building.

what's in a name. We had that sort of event happening here at a large caravan/RV/oldtimer storage place, the aftermath was terrible with insurances of many involved (long-time owners who lost their papers, coverage different than expected and such).
A grim reminder to get through the paperwork and update where necessary.

Hope things turn out allright with the owners of the boats involved there.

That's a real shame. I feel for the boat owners and the marina. They have their work cut out for them. Would be interesting to hear what the cause was, and just how many people have no coverage as Phrancus mentioned. There was a house boat fire at a marina in Port Severn not too long ago. Thankfully it was outside on land and isolated form others except for some heat damage to another houseboat blocked behind it. It was a total right-off except for the pontoons. The cause was determined to be due to shrink wrapping. The contracted crew had just finished wrapping her earlier that day. Don't know what happened but a couple of hours after they left, she caught fire.

What is it with this year?!! Can't be over soon enough. It was great boating weather though IMO. Going to be a long winter, boat shows cancelled

Glad that no one was hurt. The rest is just stuff. As far as papers go, thing like that should be left in an off site place. Our boat insurance is at home and not on the boat. We also have a copy of it with our insurance broker and "cloud" storage.

It was disheartening to hear one of the reporters being dismissive and saying "but everybody has insurance because it's required by the marina", as if all the insurance coverages were sufficient to even cover all the financial impact to the boatowners. Even if that were so, can you imagine the headaches of trying to replace a boat you loved with something else you have no experience with and no knowledge on what's 'good' and 'bad' until you get a few hours on the helm?? Can you imagine the effort you'd have to go through to replace something you've become accustomed to, with something else that might not be ideal because of the market being tight right now? The only thing "good" for those boatowners would be if the market crashed really hard and there were a lot of good inventory coming on the market at great prices, but who wants to look forward to that kind of event??

However, the marina doesn't require that you have sufficient coverage to totally replace what you have into the boat, only that you have sufficient liability coverage for the marina and other boaters in case you or your boat is found to be the cause. In a case like this the actual cause might never be found so you may not be able to rely on someone elses' liability policy.

Good to hear nobody was injured in the fire.
The above is strictly my opinion always based on years of doing...remember to support local business , it pays back.

I've stayed at that marina a couple of times on cruises. It's the nicest marina in that area. I have friends who keep their boats there. Don't know if any of them were stored in that building yet.
