355 AC Transducer Type and Deadrise

Postby gmac98004 » December 19th, 2020, 2:25 pm

Hey Gang,

We have a gorgeous 1998 355 Aft Cabin here in Washington State. I’ve installed a new Garmin radar combo kit with “ClearVu" and CHIRP. We’re planning on installing a new through hull transducer this winter. Strictly Puget Sound cruising. So max depth of 500’.

Any suggestions on transducer type and also importantly, what is the deadrise angle I should plan for? There are a few options available and I don’t want to goof that up!

Thanks for any advice you can give us!

Cheers, Greg

If my memory serves me correct, that deadrise angle is almost flat. I think it is only about 7 degrees. Your best bet would be to call Carver. Have your hull# and they can provide other misc. info from your construction log for that vessel. 920-822-1600

Pretty sure the 355 dead rise is 12 degrees.

Hi Cooler!

I did indeed call Carver! Old school fuzzy sounding answering machine so I wasn't positive I even had the right number!!

They called back later this afternoon and they indicated that going with a deadrise of roughly 12 degrees would be best.

Thank you so much!

Regards, Greg

Greg, before you commit to purchasing a specific angle, you need to decide first where the ducer is going to be installed for best accessibility, installation, and performance, then check the angle at that particular location as it's likely that the angle will differ from one area to another.

I agree....remember the dead rise angle is measured near the transom....the further forward you go the angle will increase dramatically past the relatively flat aft section going forward......so when Carver gave you the angle.....were they saying that is the angle where the transducers are installed at the factory or just the deadrise spec.
The above is strictly my opinion always based on years of doing...remember to support local business , it pays back.

GMAC - that number is a really old number. They must use the old answering machine on that one. :-D But they always call back. Excellent customer service. I have to go pick up some meat in their neighborhood tomorrow. I am going to stop in and see if they have any Carver apparel. Also, just for info purpose, my depth finder was installed at factory. They located it just aft of mid-ship. 8-) er

Hi Gang,

I did indeed discuss WHERE exactly the deadrise is 12 degrees. As you've mentioned, the deadrise at the transom is significantly less than midship. The Carver rep did mention that although he was not 100% sure......12% at midship was probably a very accurate number.

He also mentioned that because I don't have an A/C unit on board, placing on port side would be preferable. Lastly, he confirmed that installing the transducer far away from anything that would cause bubbles or unusual water flow under the hull would be much preferable.

Thanks to everyone for the tips! Photos and follow up in February when I haul out!

Be Safe, GMAC

Just to clarify. The transducer just shouldn't be behind anything that produces bubbles or distrubances. It can be forward of or next to such stuff, just not behind. I had my depth/temp about 5" next to a speed transducer. Would never put it behind the speed transducer, but next it is no problem.

The transducer on my Mariner, installed by factory is on the port side, just about10" to port of center. It is actually very near my shower sump. 8-) er
