Alternator replacement

Postby jsurfwhite » December 21st, 2020, 10:04 am

I have a 7.4 L gas mercruiser on a 2000 Carver 356 Aft Deck. The alternator is frozen, locked up, and needs to be replaced. Do I go after-market or OEM? Thanks

Any shops in your area that can rebuild it?

Whichever way you go, make sure you are buying a sealed, marine unit

Aftermarket would be fine, provided it is some quality item. I've heard mixed reviews in the Sierra, but wouldn't be that concerned if I had to make the purchase. Especially if you have twin engines, where you can tolerate a failure pretty easily.

That said, my first choice would be a local alternator/starter shop. If it's any good, they know what needs to be done and likely have everything in stock. They also would well know the marine standards. We have a shop locally that I've dealt with for over 40 years, so I'd go with them in a heartbeat. You likely have a similar shop somewhere near you too.

Update on alternator. OEM part was Mando AC165617. Bought alternator from DB Electric, and installed. Everything fit, and up and running.
