Ship Cracks In Half At Sea

Postby Midnightsun » February 4th, 2021, 2:51 pm

Must have been a really old wreck of a vessel for this to happen.

There was a ship not that far off, on the right side of the video. Surprised they lost crew.

This is not that rare. One of the Great Lakes freighters snapped in half getting towed over to China for salvage not too long ago.

That qualifies as a bad day! Sounds like the 3 lost were near the break. Most of crew was rescued. I am staying away from that body of water for sure. 8-) er

On February 18, 1952, while en route from New Orleans to Boston, Pendleton broke in two in a gale south of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The Coast Guard motor lifeboat CG 36500 captained by Boatswain's Mate, First Class Bernard Webber rescued 32 men from the stern half of the ship - 35 people in a 36 open motor life boat in a storm strong enough to break a ship in two.

The rescue of the survivors of the shipwrecked Pendleton is considered one of the most daring rescues of the United States Coast Guard. All four crew of CG-36500 were awarded the Coast Guard's Gold Lifesaving Medal. By the way, the boat lost its compass on the way out to the wreck (no electronics back then).

The unofficial motto of the USCG: "You have to go out, you don't have to come back!"

If anyone hasn't seen the movie THE FINEST HOURS, you should track down a copy and watch it. Pretty good.

I think it's surprising more big boats like this don't break while out in some of those storms. If you haven't seen the videos on youtube where they're filing INSIDE the boat walkways and you can see the whole vessel twisting and bending, track some of those down too and watch them. At least one of them was filmed on the Great Lakes too. It's amazing metal can bend and twist like that and not eventually just snap. Lots of stories about the early Liberty Ships too that ended up with cracked hulls.

Scary stuff....nowadays there is video of almost everything......imagine in past years the stuff that didn't get filmed in HD...... :-O

Some of the videos of ships in storms are enough to keep me on a small lake.
The above is strictly my opinion always based on years of doing...remember to support local business , it pays back.
