Gas Gauge

Postby Tort4247 » July 27th, 2022, 5:04 pm

I have a 1995 Carver 355 aft and my vdo gas gauge broke and I need to replace it but don't know what gauge to purchase with or without sending unit and ohms . The gauge had no numbers or model number on back . The plastic disintegrated

Have you determined if its the guage or sending unit. You don't need to buy both unless you just want too. Sending unit test by going to tank and grounding pink wire and guage will peg. You then know if its guage or sender

Welcome aboard.

If it's VDO chances are it's the European standard resistance. Hopefully it's a defective sender because its likely the gauges aren't available anymore unless you can find them on-line through someone like https://www.greatlakesskipper.com/
Don't forget you have access under the helm through the back of the forward bench if I remember correctly. From there, you can do a couple of other checks in addition to the one G36 mentioned. If that test doesn't tell you anything, don't be too quick to condemn the gauge or sender before checking your wiring, harness plugs, etc. If I recall, it's one gauge with a switch to check two tanks? If so, you want to confirm there's continuity through the switch too.

I have seen the resistance/ohm working range stamped on the sending unit....it was an older one though.
The above is strictly my opinion always based on years of doing...remember to support local business , it pays back.
