Used boat sales vs Marine fuel price

Postby bud37 » March 4th, 2022, 4:10 pm

It should be interesting to see if there are a large number of used boats on the market this year once the pain of the high fuel prices hits home.

Still cheaper for you guys in the US, in Canada we are getting hammered, almost 1.80 a litre/6.84 CAD/ USG which is about 5.30 USD/USG and that is not marine gas, just highway. Diesel is even more.

A wild guess for marine gas in Canada to fill our old boat....250 USG total at 2.50 CAD/Litre = About 2375 CAD to fill from MT as opposed to approx. 1120 CAD when we sold it...... :-O ..... :censored:

Anybody got any current marine fuel price numbers on the water for gas and diesel ??
The above is strictly my opinion always based on years of doing...remember to support local business , it pays back.

Pretty sure we will hit $2.50 a litre by spring. Going to be a hull speed year for most and a lot of dock queens this year.
Doubt it will cause people to sell, they will just travel less and use the marina more. This is definitely a temporary price increase, just need to wait it out.

I filled my tanks today at $3.99 a gallon, marina just got a new shipment and will be raising it to $4.30. Fortunately they only adjust pricing with a new shipment and don't change it , just because. Will be interesting or maybe scary to see how this summer plays out with fuel. Maybe riding the jetskis's more.

The last time gas and inflation jumped like this in 2007-2008, the boat sales pretty much evaporated. Since then, the sales of smaller boats has been going crazy, but anything over about 35' pretty much has become a build to order business. Almost no dealers stock them except for maybe center consoles in big $ markets such as south florida.

My Son owns a Gas Station/Party Store. His gas supplier called him on Thursday and told him to plan on $5.00 a gallon his price by summer. That means probably about $5.69 at the pump for regular. I am thinking it will be over $6.00 a gallon on the water. Glad I downsized and trailer so I can buy my gas on land.

Rick,

Indeed you have more/better options. Could even park it at home with no fees and skip a season if you so desire.

Going to really enjoy the efficiency of the diesels at hull speed. Last season I only went through a single tank including both mains and aux tanks and I was not even trying to save. For the first time in my life I did not top off the tanks last year, believe I am sitting around 3/4 tank. :-(

Good news is my wife drives a 2020 Tesla Y and I a 2022 Tesla Model S. At least it will take some of the sting away from the 400km round trip to the marina every weekend. :-D

  I like your sense of humor Hans ;-) but I think you'll be waiting a while. After this crisis is over, they'll just come up with another one to maintain high prices, they always do.
