2007 42ss refrigerator

Postby rc20948 » April 5th, 2017, 12:11 pm

I own a 2007 42SS. Bought it two years ago. My refrigerator needs to be replaced. Problem is the outside dimensions of a new Nova Kool RFU9000 9.1 CU FT AC/DC Two Door Refrigerator & Freezer aren't the same as the existing unit. The new units are approximately 2 inches longer in depth and if installed would prevent the hatch access to storage area under galley from opening. Has anyone encountered a similar situation and did anyone come up with a suitable solution?

Appreciate any feedback.

I replaced by fridge last year looked at several models and brands I ended up with this unit . Don't know if your stuck on nova but I am very happy with my choice. Don't want to bash any others opinions but I liked the room this has and freezer on top cold air falls. 3yr warranty and keeps ice cream

Most likely even if you could find the same model replacement, your going to have to modify the opening to make it fit, heaven forbid 10 years later your can find a plug and play unit! Mike

I still have (knock on wood) the original fridge. it works well, but doesn't stay cold enough for hard ice cream unless on shore power with a cool cabin.
I like ice cream!

Why are you replacing it, can it not be repaired? What is the cause of the failure?

My 1981 Carver 3007 Aft Cabin has I believe the original refrigerator. It works but I do believe it may be nearing its useful end. It does not work on 12V but does on shore power. That's fine with me. If and when it does quit I am considering replacing it with a more conventional refrigerator if I can find one that will fit in the space.

I have been on a few boats that have replaced their marine version refrigerators with conventional units that operate on 110 volts only. The marine ones are just to pricey for me.

Then again if it happens in a year with no major boat related expenses I could go with a marine version. I do keep the right to change my mind. :captain2:

If you do go with the 110 volt only Rick, and you spend a lot of time on the hook, install an inverter. If you think you'll want to use other 110 volt loads off the inverter as well, tie it into the ship's main panel with a source switch. If you just want to run the fridge and nothing else, wire it to so that the fridge outlet is switchable between shore to inverter. If it's just for the fridge, it doesn't have to be that big a unit but for the sake of the compressor, get a true sine wave one, and if it's going into your engine bay, it must be ignition proof. We can help you with the install.

Having said all that, sometimes an inverter install can be pricey, and what you save in not getting the option built into the fridge can be eroded with an inverter install, but for those with no generator, it's a good option. The expense of the install can be simple with minimum cost or sky's the limit, depends on your needs.

I had not thought of that, thanks for the tip. There is a real big RV place within a couple of miles from my home. I will go and check it out.
