If they are 8.1's they are 496 motors. If the boat isn't in the water, and you don't have water running to the intakes on the raw water pumps, you don't want to run it for more then a minute or you will be replacing impellers and maybe exhaust hoses. If the fuel gauges read empty, maybe the previous owner had them drained. If so, I doubt 5 gallons would be enough to cover your pick up screens. So you may need at least 15 gallons in each tank. From the factory you most liley dont have racors. Just standard can filters. I THINK the crusdaders have another filter before the fuel pump.

I'd pour more than 5 gallons in the tank too. That seems like all it would do is be fumes in tanks that big

You might also have Oberg filters. They nickname them "UFO" filters because they look like a classic UFO shape... big round disk. You can take them apart and clean them.. they just have a screen in the middle.

I am going there on Thursday - I'll take some pictures. I finally arranged a marine mech that is going to help with the fuel issue. Maybe pour 10 gallons in each tank (port needle has come above E mark about 1 mm, SB seems inop and stuck below E) - that oughta get me to fuel dock @ the next door marina (about a quarter mile or less). I will get 50-60 gallons to each tank as I get engines running.

Right now SB engine is running perfectly. wonder if i should troll over to fuel dock on that engine alone? The fuel dock is not that far.

OK - update, Port engine is good but fuel tank has water. we extracted 2 Snapple bottles worth of water and then decided to stop, purge the entire port tank (maybe 20-30 gallons in it) and start fresh.

The generator is a mystery. replaced starter solenoid and it still clicks but does not supply 12V to the starter. I am beginning to think someone put wrong model solenoid, and I am replacing the wrong model with the same thing. I can short the two big posts and generator cranks (doesnt start - most likely needs carbs cleaned).

Did you check the oil in the genny? Most have a low oil safety switch.

No, I did not check the oil in generator or engines for that matter (what a dummy). I just planned on changing everything once I could get engines started. I'll check it next time I visit.

Anyone has any ideas on how to (legally and safely) extract a fuel tank?

Do you mean extract the actual tank, or just the fuel from the tank??

If you're just trying to get the fuel out, I've purchased an electric fuel pump and connected it to a piece of steel brake line that I was able to lower into the tank via my fill ports (their straight-through shots). If I couldn't go in the fill ports, I would have taken off the fuel sensor and put the line in there. You could use a copper section that might be more flexible too and this allows you to get the end right down into the deepest corner to get the most out. Make sure you put some kind of filter on the intake side of the pump or you'll ruin the pump. And after pumping bad gas with it, run some good gas or you'll also ruin the pump.

Being overly spark-conscious, I grounded everything. I even put the plastic gas can that I was pumping the gas into on a wet towel and clipped a ground wire to that to make sure no static built up.

Yes - I just need gas and water pumped out.

Another great update: Aft and FWD cabin AC's fixed today. I luckily got a hold of a knowledgable tech who came in and within 2.5 hours had both units going. One had a pipe plumbed wrong by a previous tech and the other needed a control board. I have not seen the bill yet, but it gives me pleasure to check off an item in my list.
