New boat purchase

Postby LateStarter » August 12th, 2019, 4:44 pm

This will probably sound dumb but here goes:
I contacted a seller of a boat thru Facebook. It is listed as a 1990 38 foot Carver motor yacht. It has a large swim platform at the stern with steps on each side going to the cockpit. There are ladders on the port and starboard leading to the control bridge. I’ve looked online and the pictures of the 1990 Santego have a plaque on the starboard side that says Carver 380. This boat has a oval plaque that only says 38. I don’t have the Hull I’d # and will be going to see the boat on Saturday. The only pictures that I found online that resemble the ones on facebook are for a 1988 Carver. The seller hasn’t supplied the hull I’d yet.
I may be acting overly skeptical, but better safe than sorry. Any suggestions of how to visually I’d the year will be appreciated.

Vin would be the only way to get the true year. Check Carver Yachts site.

Welcome aboard. Can't say that I recall any with two ladders leading to the bridge, 2 staircases yes but unless I'm having a senior's moment, not 2 ladders.

Get him m to send you a picture of the hull member and contact Carver with it. They will tell you exactly what it is and possibly where it was originally shipped. The last 2 digits will be the year of manufacture.

Good luck and keep us posted.

LateStarter, what you describe sounds to be a 1990 3867. The santego 380 came after 92 and was previously the 3467. There can be a lot of confusion surrounding the 88, 89, and 90 models of the Santego. The 3067 was 34ft OAL, the 3467, was 38ft OAL and the 3867 was 44’11” OAL. After 91 or 92 they rebranded them and the 3467 became the 380 and the 3867 became the 640. After 92 or 93 the biggest of the Santego’s (3867/640) disappeared altogether. On the internet, the 3467 and the 3867 are often confused with each other., but if you know what to look for the are readily distinguishable. Can you take a screen shot and post here or send to me in a pm? The 3867 is a little more rare than the more common 3467.

On another note the 88 through 90 3867 all look the same, the biggest difference between the those years were choices in options and color...Red or Blue.

Welcome to the forum....

I agree a pic would help greatly, but if it has port and stbd ladders ( 4 rungs ) to the bridge its a 38 with the oval 38.....if it has one set of steps on the port its a 34, depending on the year I believe.... no telling which of those years unless it is the one with the extra bunk cabin, one year only, real wide..3897....that is a find.

The above is strictly my opinion always based on years of doing...remember to support local business , it pays back.

LateStarter, would the screenshot below happen to be the one your talking about? If so it is a 3867 and it has the second state room with the bunk beds.

Bud37
Colton posted a picture and that is the boat. It has the 2 bunkbeds. The seller provided the hull is and it came back as being made in August 1989 for model year 1990.
I'll be viewing it on Saturday and if I like what I see, the next step will be a survey and sea trial --after the new 454 is installed. Thanks for yo r help

LateStarter forgot to say welcome aboard and good luck. We love our Santego. It’s the single stateroom version. Our head and shower are in the same location as the second stateroom on the one you will be looking at which makes the galley area a little bigger. That looks to be a great price if the survey and seatrial good well. There is also one listed in St Louis, MO for $59,000. Is a.year or two newer as it’s the renamed 640 model and has the forward angled radar arch instead of the tower. :captain:
