1983 3207 aft cabin generator

Postby markstarbucks » August 12th, 2019, 7:48 pm

we just recently purchased an 83 3207 aft cabin that did not have a generator when we purchased it, does anyone know what size or model generator goes with this model? if so where could i find one? any help would be greatly appreciated

Don't be too concerned about what came with the boat when new. Probably not made anymore. Do your research and figure out how much room you have, can you run the necessary wiring and where will you place your through hull and exhaust. Then look at available units that will fit your space. I'm guessing something in the 6kw size should meet your needs assuming you have 2 AC units to power up.

Not sure what you paid for the boat, but a new 5kw marine generator will cost about 10k plus install. So, you really have to want one, as you will never get an ROI.

You could always purchase a portable generator. I carry my Honda Eu2000i portable on board whenever I think I may want or need power where there is none, such as on the hook. My Honda powers everything except my A/C, not enough oomph.

My dock neighbor uses his Honda to run his AC unit and it is a 16k BTU. I'm guessing your AC is an older, less efficient model that needs more amps, especially for start up.

You are correct. My unit was installed by a previous owner in 1997. Still works great but takes a bit of a jolt when it starts up. As long as it continues to work I will keep it. If I keep the boat long enough I see a future when it will have to be replaced. My little 2000 Honda does not have the oomph to start the A/C unit. My previous boat had a 10000 BTU unit and the Honda handled it well.
