PSS Shaft Seal Install on Carver 405

Postby FSP » August 20th, 2019, 6:58 pm

I'm wondering if there are any 405 or similar model owners out there that have had PSS shaft seals installed/replaced. Can you advise if they had to remove the props or rudders to get the job done or any otehr issues encountered in the process? How long did the job take and approximate cost if you are willing to share that.
Thank you,
Frank

How much room you have between your coupler and the stern tube will determine whether you need to remove the props. As long as you can push the shaft back enough to get the hardware in place over the shaft between it and the coupler, you're good to go. Usually there's enough room to do this with the props in place but applications vary. You shouldn't have to remove rudders, at the most, just the props if the shafts have to go past the rudders.

The PSS is a face seal type dripless system, have you looked into lip seal types? There are pros and cons to both.

Just a follow up on this topic which will apply to the 405/406 models. My boat is a 1998 405 with two Cummins 6BTA 5.9 330 hp. The job was done with PSS dripless seals. Access is fairly good compared to other brands. They did have to pull the props. The shaft size is 1 1/2 inches. The stern tube size you select is the one that covers 2 3/4 "to 2 7/8".
