Valve under galley sink

Postby sloopjonb » February 19th, 2020, 3:14 pm

On our 455, there is lever to a valve located under the galley sink, inside the cabinet. One position is marked "in service", and the other position is marked "tank fill". I have no idea what tank it is referring to, nor its purpose. Anyone know???

Do you have the optional propane burner stove? If so, that would probably be the valve that allows propane to the burners, or the valve to close when the propane tank is being filled. 8-) er

That's a good guess, but I turned the valve and hear water going through pipes to somewhere. Baffling. I called Carver and they said it isn't theirs, unless it was a custom thing for a customer.

Sure sounds like a manual potable water tank fill selector. I think this is simply a valve that was installed to allow you to fill the potable water tank when connected to city water.

I believe Viper has one and I installed a semi automatic, solenoid operated one. This basically eliminates the need to use a hose in the filler port each time you want to fill the water tank, simply turn the valve instead.

Ya I'm thinking that's what it's for Hans. Take a look at the input line leading into your fresh water pump from the tank. This tank fill may be hooked up there with a tee and fills the tank using the line going to the pump. If you have a tank gauge, turn the valve to "tank fill" and see if the level on the gauge changes. If you don't have a gauge and this does in fact fill the tank, water will eventually overflow and discharge through the vent fitting on the side of the hull.

Can you hear water going through the line with the dockside water shut off?

Okay, this sounds like a great idea. Viper/Hans, I think I want to take this on in the spring. Could you provide the details on how you accomplished this. :worthy:

Thanks

Greg

Greg, it can be as elaborate as Hans' setup for which I'm pretty sure there is a thread here, or as simple as installing a TEE fitting in the line between the tank and the fresh water pump and running a line to the nearest or most convenient spot to install the tank fill valve, then run a line from the valve to an existing cold water line and TEE into it. A lot of guys just go under the nearest sink to the water pump as the pump is usually accessible. You can keep an eye on a tank level gauge if you have one or just watch for water to spill out of the overboard vent fitting.
