Help- 355 Aft Cabin Icemaker- how do you winterize?

Postby Plum » November 14th, 2019, 1:49 pm

Recently purchased our first boat, a 1996 355 Aft Cabin. We are trying to winterize our boat. A handyman can't figure out to winterize the icemaker. Should there be a water cutoff inside?

We don't want to shut off all water because we will be living on board. This new USED boat thing can be a little overwhelming.

Thank you.

Plum;

If you plan on living on the boat through the winter and you're not winterizing the water system, will the water line to the ice maker and the unit itself freeze? You are going to be heating your boat to live on it and the temps need to fall near 32 F for that to freeze. Your only concern is the water line to the unit as the inside of the unit is frozen anyway, its a freezer. You can make ice all year, if you need to. If your ice maker is located on the aft deck like mine was on my 356, just run a small ceramic heater there and keep the temps up so it wouldn't freeze.

However, if the line freezing is an issue for you, there should be a 1/4 " line coming to the ice maker from your water system. Normally the shut off for the water is normally behind the unit where the 1/4" tube connects to the unit. To access the connection you can remove the plate on the bottom front of the unit or access it by pulling the unit out, depending on the brand you have. Typically, I winterize mine by flushing non-tox through the water system and all the fixtures. The non-tox will pump through the ice maker through its normal course until you make pink ice cubs. However, you are not winterizing you entire system.

I recommend locating the plastic 1/4" inch tube that connects to the ice maker. You will have to trace it back to the inside/warm part of your boat and thats where I would install the shut off for your needs. You want to winterize from that point forward to the ice maker. You can then blow compressed air through to line to the ice maker at this location or pump non-tox through it. You can buy a ball valve at a hardware store that will attach to the plastic tube so you can run the rest of your water system after its disconnected or shut off. I don't recommend winterizing this at the back of the ice maker as the water line may freeze.

In the spring when you want to start the ice maker again, just open the ball valve and run the ice maker till you are making clear cubes.

In order to put air or non-tox through the line and ice maker, you can make a connector that will attach to your compressor or pump with plumbing parts at a minimal charge. Install a "T" in the line to connect your compressor or pump to the line between the shut off and the ice maker on the warm side of the line.

Good luck. Let us know how you make out.

Greg

Plum;

Do you have a bar sink over the ice maker on the aft deck as well?

The icemaker is fed from the same line that supplies your aft deck sink. There is not a separate shutoff from the factory for these two units. The feed line runs behind and over the port side aft closet. Also, if you are subject to very cold temps water lines for your dock side inlet and transom shower will freeze regardless if you have heat in the boat or not as these run in an uninsulated, unheated area, same with your aft head water supply. Also, please keep in mind if the water you are floating in gets down below about 40 degrees, your reverse cycle heat pumps will freeze the and lock out, shutting down your heat source. So make sure you have other heaters, and heat below the floor in the engine room.
If you are in SC, and not subject to long periods of below freezing temps, you may just let some water trickle on cold nights?

yes it is on the bow deck ( I think that is what it is called.) the level you climb up to from the dive platform.

thanks. we have purchased 3 eheat units which were a tip from a neighbor boat owner. $.06/hour to use. unbelievable. I'm going to look for those shutoffs this weekend.

we wrapped the dock water supply coming to my boat with heat tape which was recommended by our marina.

just purchased 2 bilge heaters as well.

lots of stuff to do.

thanks for your help.

I suggest it would be smater to fill your boats water tank with dock water and not keep it connected to dock pressure water in the winter. You wouldnt have to worry about freezing, just refill it when needed. If you leave and power is out and freezes and water line breaks in the boat and you didnt or forgot to turn off the water you could have sunk or flooded boat.

Plum;

As stated by tomschauer and the reason I asked if you had a bar sink on your aft deck. Your 1/4" line to the ice maker will be from the 1/2" line to your bar sink through a "T". If you plan on winterizing the ice maker, then the sink line will need to done as well. Find the line that tomschauer speaks of and that's where you need to shut the line off and winterize from there. Need to make sure that you winterize all that can freeze. Not really familiar with a partial water system shut down/winterization. That does complicate things.

Sounds like your marina is used to this. Up here we would do a total water system shutdown/winterization and use the public washroom and drink bottled water. Your situation not the norm, however, you will not be dealing with the harsh temps like we do in northern Ontario. Having said that, you have to be ready for anything. ;-)

Good luck with this.

Just to clarify, there is no shut off valve for the sink and icemaker. You will need to remove the back of the aft cabin closet, cut in a valve and a "t" with a valve to drain the water from the line.
