Fresh Water Monitor Issue

Postby denpooch » April 25th, 2024, 3:27 pm

Hello again. I have found that the water tank level sensor is not working this season. Does anyone know how to trouble shoot this? I guess it's prudent to confirm it's a sending unit issue or some other problem. Swapping out the sending unit looks like a pain because they have it buried under a bunch of cables. Before I go through that hassle it would be good to be sure that is the issue.
All advise appreciated.

Look close at the top of the sensor, there may be a couple very small screws ( maybe just one I can't remember ) with + or - , work the screws back and forth just a bit and watch the tank gage as they are quite sensitive, make sure the gage is turned on. You can adjust the gage by this method....adjust gage to show MT when tank MT and adjust gage to show full when tank full.
The above is strictly my opinion always based on years of doing...remember to support local business , it pays back.

Hey mates. I checked the sending unit and there are no adjustments, simply 5 screws securing the unit to the tank.
I removed the screws and lifted the unit. The round piece on the rod was moving fine. When I turned it back on at the panel, it still read empty.
Before I replace the unit can anyone give me an idea on how to check if the gauge is functioning?
I don't want to purchase a new sending unit only to find out that the gauge is at fault.
Thanks

These sensors work by measuring continuity/resistance. Simply connect the 2 sender wires together and take a reading at the gauge and then disconnect them and take another reading. You should get a reading of full and another empty which will confirm the gauge is working. If it still does not function I suggest you connect the 2 sensor wires at the back of the gauge to confirm there is no break in the wires leading from the gauge to the sender.
Cheers, Hans

Great idea Hans. Also, on our 12v panel in the salon, our water monitor has a dedicated breaker to power the gauge. Make sure that breaker is on.
