I'd try and fix what I have. When the piston is fully retracted. Is the broken part still external? I'm guessing it is. Get a ship to fabricate a stub and weld it on with the piston fully extended. Someone that had welding certs, not just anybody with a welder
Thanks

Yeah I thought about that but I think the shaft might be bent as well. I think it’s hard to see in the photo, but it looks like that internal shaft has a pretty significant bend and I’m not sure if that can be straightened. I’ll get it out this weekend and take a closer look.
Thanks,
Eric

You only want to do this once, right? Get another cylinder.

Does anyone know if this is a K-19 or a k-18? I've just learned there two similar units with the only difference being the stroke length. k-19 is 9", while the k-18 is 7". I didn't think to measure it when i was there this past weekend, and never thought to get a picture of the label itself. Just thought if someone knew i could get the ball rolling.
Thanks,
Eric

Is the actual rod bent? If not, could you re-thread the end?

Looks like your tie-rod is bent too.

yes, the tie rod end is for sure bent. I just was going through my pictures and did find one that confims my thought that the interal rod/shaft is infact bent as well.

I'm resigned to having to replace it, just need to find out if it's a K-19 or k-18. Wasn't smart enought to take a pic of the label on the cylinder while i was there last.... looks like I have another 2+ hour trip up to the boat in my future.

Not a specific response to any of the issues posted above, but I found this old post on another site and thought it might be a good idea to archive somewhere else in case someone might find the info useful, particularly the last two paragraphs. This post was made in 2010 so the words "still" used below may not apply anymore.

Hynautic is made by Teleflex Marine (the same makers as SeaStar, BayStar and Capilano steering systems).

The following parts for Hynautic are still being made
- H-20 series helm pumps
- H-40 series helm pumps
- K-6 Outboard Steering Cylinders
- K-18 and K-19 steering cylinders.

ALL seals are still available (see link below for seal kit details)

http://ww2.seastarsteering.com/REPLA...TS/replace.htm [note:that link was non longer good)]

Anywhere there is a SeaStar, or, Capilano Steering Cylinder that has the same stroke and output force as the older Hynautic, Teleflex opted to use SeaStar and Capilano Cylinders only. There are some slight installation modifications that may need to be done to get the new cylinders to work, but this is minor.

ALL SeaStar and Capilano helms will work just fine with any Hynautic helm and cylinder.

Well I did make it back to the boat last weekend and although I couldn’t make out the model # on the cylinder label, I was able to figure out I do have a K19, based on measurements. Oh, and the shaft is definitely bent.
I was undecided on whether to go with a used K19 or just bite the bullet and get a new Seastar HC5323-3. Found a used k19 for $300 on eBay, but once you figure in shipping, tax, and a seal kit I was going to be over $400. I was able to find a new Seastar from Seatech Marine Products in CA for $599 including tax and delivery. So I went that route. More than I was hoping to spend, but I won’t have to mess with rebuilding a 40 year old cylinder. Just need to install it and then bleed the system.
Thanks,
Eric
