Fireboy BB350

Postby tonyiiiafl » November 25th, 2016, 8:21 pm

I was sluicing around in my bilge and saw the original FIREBOY BB350 fire extinguisher system. YEP! Looks original and untouched, gauge reading charged. That makes this 20 years old. Are there any regs as to having these checked or something?

Someone else can chime in here, but I am not aware of any regulations requiring these to be serviced for recreational use. That being said, you can take the unit to a local fire extinguisher service company and they will weigh it and retag it if it is still full.

No regs that I'm aware of either. Is the unit wired into a control box and monitor panel at the helm? If not and there's no wiring going to the cylinder, then I wouldn't worry about it. If it's a monitored unit with control functions like shutting down engines, the sensors, controllers, and panels can fail.

No working. Just a firematic nozzle that activates with heat

No regs I'm aware of. I'd google it and see if anything came up. Now with ur dry chemical extinguishers service is simple. Check the gauges and if still in the green range they should be OK. Take them out of the holder and using a rubber mallet, turn the unit upside down and tap it with the mallet. This unpacks the powder inside that tends to settle and pack in the bottom of the extinguisher. You may want to take a sharpie and note the date you checked and serviced the extinguisher on the back. Oh yea, if your extinguishers handles are plastic and need to be recharged, just buy a new one, plastic one won't reseal well for some reason. Mike
