Boat’s Name Removal

Postby Sadey » October 18th, 2018, 7:01 am

As part of the renaming ceremony for our new boat we have to remove the painted name on the stern. I’ve seen a video using EZ OFF oven cleaner. What do the experts here say? The name is being changed from Rememberance to Agradecido. Hopefully Neptune and Poseidon will approve.
Thank you for the help!

I assume it is a decal and not painted. That being the case this tool is a miracle worker, removed all mine with this. https://www.amazon.com/Whizzy-Wheel-Decal-Remover-Adapter/dp/B00FJF0O2K

Ooops, never mind, saw you said painted. Will leave the above post there for others with decals.

Never tried EZ-off for paint. On mine, it had been painted for about 10 years. I did acetone and used a scotch-brite pad. After the paint was all gone, you could still see the raised letters, so I ended up wetsanding a bit and then polished. Even still... 20 years later, if the sun is reflecting just right you can still see some of where the lettering was. I figure if I ever get around to putting a new name on it you won't be able to see any of the old stuff.

Each aft deck to bow door has a decal with the name on it so I’m going to leave one on until the two ceramonies are complete. Your right. This is a one owner/one name boat so we aren’t taking any chances.
Thank you for the help!

Well the EZ Off HD did the trick. Sprayed then scotch pad about four different times. Took a little elbow grease but came completely off. The neighbor stopped by and said the previous owner just had the name touched up this past season. Guess that’s why it took so many applications. Picked the worse day though, 48F with winds out of the WNW gusting over 30kts. Some gust hit 67kts in the Chicagoland area. Luckily for me the winds were WNW and the bow points WNW. Being in the lee with full sun made for a pleasant end of the season project. Left on one decal with the old name on until the renaming ceremony next April. I’ll be last in first out. Haul out day is the 10/30. Only because I leave the 31st to go out west hunting.
Thank you for the help!

Glad that you got it done. I have been thinking I would like to change the name on my boat too. The previous owner did such a nice looking job on the name that I am not sure what I will do.

I crunched my plexiglas so my job will be pretty easy. Drill out rivets, make patterns from old ones, have plastic shop cut new ones, then at the renaming ceremony add the vinyl lettering.

Just make sure you complete the ceremony before you display the new name. You also have some time to find some reasonable priced flute glasses. You need at least eight. Good luck!
