Teh secret to not breaking them is teaching people to do it right!! You DO NOT just twist the knob to get them tight. You push hard on the lens with your THUMB right next to the 'dog' and then VERY LIGHTLY twist the knob WITH THE TIPS OF YOUR FINGERS. Do each one TWICE to make sure they're all even. If you follow this procedure you won't break any more dogs.

If the gasketing is getting cracked, brittle or hard, you can replace that. They sell it by the foot and it's easy to do. Just dig the old stuff out, clean the channel then stick the new stuff back in. It seals real nice.
