Replacing lenses for port windows- 360 Mariner

Postby boat36forfun » April 14th, 2020, 10:14 am

I have to replace 2 cracked lenses on the bedroom windows. Are there any tips on how to remove the pin and spring that go thru the hinges holding everything together. Don't want to break anything and have to replace the whole unit. See pics below.

Thank you

I think it's just a friction fit and you just push the pin from one side. Use a punch slightly smaller than the pin diameter. You'll want to do that with the spring in the relaxed position which I suspect is lens in the open position. Hopefully the plastic isn't brittle and breaks. Cover the area under the porthole and spray the hinge with a lubricant first. Fingers crossed.

You really should use a clamp rather than a hammer and punch so you don't break a tab. The friction fit is only on one side, so you need to determine which side that is and push from the other side.

I'll see if I have a pic from when I removed mine, or see if I can whip one up. It's pretty simple but easier to do if you have a couple extra hands to hold the parts inline.

BTW... save your old ones. They can be cleaned up pretty good if you take some time with the 3 step plastic polishes. Even if they are beyond cleaning up, you may find some creative uses for them. I used one and mounted a couple 12vdc fans in it and cut off the top tabs. Just using the side holddowns, you can open the hatch and put in in place and use it for a cool breeze.

Thanks to both. Good info to have. Does not look to difficult but I know sometimes given the age of things it is more than you bargain for sometimes. If you find any pics as you mentioned that would be great as well.
Thank you very much.

If you look really closely at both ends of the pin you can tell which end is knurled. That's the side the pin should come out, so you need to push from the other side, while supporting the plastic on the side that is knurled, so it doesn't break off.

Just ordered 2 lenses for 86 Carver Aft Cabin and can hardly wait to have fun installing them. I got them from a company in Seattle, SailboatOwners.com
