Impeller reminder

Postby SunsetSteve » June 16th, 2021, 7:39 am

My new-to-me Riviera ran well in the fall on its sea trial. upon launch last week in my home waters one of the exhausts wasn't spilling water. I decided to have both impellers replaced, and the pic below proves what a good decision that was as the port engine was not showing any signs of problems. Thank goodness the issue was spotted at the time of launch, close to my slip at the marina.

Good that you caught it before it became a problem.

This is usually a hot topic. Some replace them every year however I believe the general consensus is 3 years. Personally I go 5. When I got my Carver it had the original impellers with 1000hrs on the clock. Changed them however they still looked brand new, go figure!

On ANY "new to you boat" impellers should be at the TOP of the list unless you KNOW, WITHOUT QUESTION, when they were replaced. Glad you caught this before it ruined a weekend (or more)!!

Hopefully they got out all the missing bits too.

I'm assuming that means you didn't get all the pieces! Hope, thoughts and prayers won't help you when you overheat at the start of a weekend with the family on board. I see it all the time. That would be the best case scenario, the worst case would be an overheat that ruins your engine or worse because you didn't catch it in time. You're running on borrowed time so I recommend you go the extra step now to save yourself some real headaches later.
