Problem railing fittings

Postby Seif911 » May 27th, 2013, 8:32 am

Good Morning All,
I have lots of beautiful railings, however once you grab them and are nervous because of the massive movement, they become less attractive. I am sure everybody has this problem sooner or later. They are suppose to have the little Allen screws (or whatever you call them). Some are missing, some are stripped, some were replaced with rivets and some were replaced with stainless steel screws. Uggg!!!

So what would be the correct way to fix these problem fittings? Any great suggestions out there?
Thanks,
Steve

The ones riveted in from the factory were meant to stay that way. The ones with bolts and missing set screws, I would pull that all out and get quality cup point stainless set screws. Set the rail tight to the bottom of the socket, and, using a NEW allen wrench, tighten them down.

If still loose, you may have to rotate the fittings 180 degrees so you get a new bite with the set screw.

I see you are looking for a lot of possibly odd and out-of-production items in some of your other posts.

Grab a piece of paper and make a list of all the stuff you need. Grab a wad of cash or a credit card, jump in your car, and drive down to Kendor's. Kendor's is sort of an outlet store for boating stuff. Lots of surplus manufacturer's stuff there. It just south of Milwaukee, on Ryan Road. South down 43, past Mitchell Airport, Ryan Road. Head west about two miles maybe. Kendor's is on the south side of Ryan Road. You'll probably pass it, but you'll know it's Kendors because of all the boat trailers, radar arches, and CC console tops in front.

Plan on spending some time there and spending some money.
Thanks
Fred

Struggling to get down to Great Lakes skipper. Thus far it has been all eBay. I have new SS set screws. It appears that every place I need them the threads are wrecked. I will have to drill new holes are thread them, I am thinking. I did did put a #12 screw in a few key places were it was essential I have a good fit. I think with the new cover on I will just finish this project in the winter. Thanks all for the suggestions.
Thanks,
Steve
