First, if your mechanic tried to start the engines knowing you had a mix of water and oil in the pan, find a new mechanic ASAP!
Next, as mentioned above, you may be able to salvage these and get several more years from them. Being raw water cooled, you have a good chance that the manifolds and or risers are the source of water. If you didn't run them long with the water in the oil, you may be able to change the bad manifolds etc. Swap the oil a couple times and keep going.
These are tough motors, if the crank bearings weren't damaged and water didn't get into the cylinders (hydro lock) you could be good for several hundred more hours....

I just changed out an engine (mercruiser 7.4) in my 88 3807, stripped the heads off and come alonged it up a ramp thru the salon doors onto the aft deck, then used same ramp to move it off aft deck onto dock. Reinstall was the reverse.

Wow. That would be an interesting thread... WITH PICTURES!

I've been wondering what I'd do if I had to get the 7.4's out of my 3607. I pulled the tranny and reduction gear by myself with a jig rigged up to handle most of the load, but an entire block is much different!

It could be just blown head gaskets or a crack in the block or heads causing the pressurization and oil/water mix. Whatever the case, I wouldn't wait to long to take action, the water in the mix can do some irreversible damage to the machined surfaces. If it turns out to be a head gasket, inspect the deck surface of the block and heads to make sure it didn't cut a path in the machined surface.
