Oil for Crusader 8.1

Postby buster53 » March 26th, 2018, 10:40 am

Going to pick up our new to us 356 this weekend and want to take some supplies with us just in case.
What oil do most people use in a Crusader 8.1? I'd like to take a 3-4 qts as a back up.

I'm guessing 15w-40

On my previous gasser boats I always used Rotella T4 15W40 and still do. Buy it by the 5g pail. ;-)

I have 2001 carver with volvo 8.1 370 hp cruise around 27 mph. Burns about 27 gallons an hour at 3600 rpms your 8.1 Crusader should be 380 hp doing bout the same. You should not burn any oil but bring 15w-40 synthetic oil. This is the one in Grasonville MD nice one. You have 3 fuel tanks about 100 gallons each the stern tank can run both engines don't let them get under 1/4 of a tank of fuel. I would fill up every 3 hours of running plan your tip make sure marinas have fuel. My wife and I love the boat perfect for the bay.

All 3 tanks are almost full, meaning I've got plenty of gas to make this run. I estimate around 90 miles and I will be running in the low 20's, maybe 31-3200 rpms. I would hope I don't burn more than 130 gallons.

I personally use Mobil1 15-50, but that Rotella is very popular and a good oil. Less expensive too.

I would pick up a couple gallons, or the 5 quart jugs and if you don't need then then just use them at your next oil change.

Sounds like a nice trip to kick off the season!!! Great check ride!

(I would probably pick up a couple spare impellers too so you have them handy in case you need them)

Another vote for Mobil 1 15/50. But if it doesn't have full synthetic in now, no sense spending the extra $ for top off oil.

Rotella has zinc in it, don't think mobile one does. Our 7.4 Crusaders call for 40W. But 15W40 will get u by if you need some. Have a safe trip. You'll have plenty of fuel if all 3 are full.
