88 Carver ,Crusader engine swap?
New to me 88 carver 2897 mariner, HAs one bad motor, Wondering if I can swap a Mercruiser 5.0? Just engine. Bilge flooded.
I think its easier and cheaper then rebuilding the crusader. Will this work.. Both Inboards of course.

Re: 88 Carver ,Crusader engine swap?
Rob, if you're simply asking if everything on the Crusader will bolt onto the Merc, unless the engine generation/variants are vastly different, I don't see why not but you want to get the same generation block or you could end up with dissimilar main components and a completely different power curve on port vs starboard sides. This can cause other problems which may affect the longevity of the engine on the other side or the new replacement. There are a few different variations so you may want to do some research before you commit to the Merc. This is why when practical economically and providing the block is in good shape, it's usually best to stick with the unit you have unless you know exactly what you're getting in the replacement. In a twin engine application, this is an important consideration.rsims62 wrote:Source of the post.....HAs one bad motor, Wondering if I can swap a Mercruiser 5.0?....
I suspect you're in salt water, and if the Merc is from a salt water application, ensure it's closed cooled. Also make sure it wasn't a replacement engine at one time. In other words, was it used as a replacement before, and if so, was a "marine" engine used rather than an automotive one? They ARE different.
On that vintage of boat, you'll likely have a standard rotation and counter-rotation engine. In a straight shaft application, typically the port engine is a standard rotator. If the application incorporates a v-drive where the front of the engine faces aft, this could change the side where the standard rotating engine is placed depending on the v-drive model.
In short, it can be done but there's more to it than just looking for another 5.0L

Re: 88 Carver ,Crusader engine swap?
I have 2 part numbers 98210 Drive, and
Raw water 10258.
These are Chevy engines? correct. can I get them at any auto place? I just need to know what to cross it too?
I have a local guy with 2 crusader engines if I want them, running...but I'd like to try to get the one running for now...
thanks
