Speaking of repowering, we had some unfortunate news recently. Our Riviera has a 1983 CH 350 454 crusader.
I've spent a lot of money on her recently, and thought we had her in good working order finally. We went out to refuel and the engine started making all sorts of bad noises- banging and rattling. We picked up the closest mooring and called boat us for a tow back to our mooring.
Our mechanic said it sounded like a bad piston, and we also need the head gaskets replaced.
I really don't want to put more money into this almost 40 year old engine.

What do you recommend for a repower? Remanufactured for $3500ish, new replacement which is apparently very hard to find right now for $7000ish? Other ideas?
Luckily we did not spend a whole lot to buy the boat knowing it needed work and had an old engine, so we are trying to stay positive.
Thanks,
Pete

I'd probably be leaning heavily to remanufactured, if you're going with a reputable company. Those engines were very basic, but very reliable.

Would you be replacing both, or just the bad one?

EDIT - Argh! you should probably start a new thread, or your responses will get confused with the OPs.
