low voltage reading

Postby Crowbar » April 20th, 2022, 12:33 pm

1987 voyager twin 230 gas. STB engine only running, voltage shows 10 V. Port engine only running, voltage shows14 + V. Together running, voltage shows 10V. Is it a grounding issue, or is my std. alternator dying?

Where are you seeing the 10 volts.....that is very low......check your batteries with a multimeter then take readings at the batteries with the engines on.....don't rely on a dash gage.
The above is strictly my opinion always based on years of doing...remember to support local business , it pays back.

Does sound like there's a problem on the stbd side, but could be a connection or fuse rather than the alternator.

Confused on the "together running voltage shows 10V". Where are you measuring voltage? Do you have separate voltage gauges for each engine? How many batteries, and how are they configured?

Well! turns out the wiring harness going to the engine wasn't making good contact. It took alot of troubleshooting, but, wiggling the connection solved the problem. thanks for the input.
