Is that before and after cleaning pic ?

Ok, not bad,.... how is the head and cylinder wall? ....If you can , vacuum out the big bits stuck between the piston and the top ring land if you can take some time , it will pay off and don't forget the sharp edges on the piston top.
The above is strictly my opinion always based on years of doing...remember to support local business , it pays back.

Yea, I'd just clean that piston up (as Bud notes) and concentrate on the head and that one intake valve and put stuff together. Doesn't look like there's any visible damage to the cylinder walls either.

I've seen much worse pistons come out of very well running engines.

Yep, doesn't look bad at all...you may have dodged one here except for the labor...good thing you got it off fast...if it were mine I would remove the valves in that cylinder and check for bent/straight while the head is off especially the intake with the impact marks......it takes very little bend to create a sticky noisy valve train and inspect the seat.

Curious, hot thick in thou was that washer and did the plug survive ?

the plug survived not sure how thick the washer was but it wasn't huge . i plan on go over the valves shortly . i work from home so i just took my laptop to the boat along with the tools and i was good to go … now I'm going to pick up gaskets then i will slap her back together if all is good with the valves.
