CAT 3126 stalled . won't restart

Postby rjr » September 23rd, 2020, 3:23 pm

Recently we changed the fuel filters and afterwards started the engines and they ran fine.

Today the starboard engine coughed, choked and stalled. It won't restart. Have tried twice to restart - no luck.

Suggestions & advice welcome.

They ran fine for how long?
Did you fill the filters before you screwed them on?
Thanks

Could be a few things but if the issue is related to the filter change, make sure the filter is on tight so she's not sucking air. Check the simple stuff first but ya, as Fred asked, how long did it run for after the filter change?

I am not a diesel expert by any stretch, but if you changed the filters and didn't complete fill the canisters good chance you "ran out of fuel" .
Again, check what i say, but i think those cats had a mechanical injection pump and you need to crack a fuel line or two at the injectors while someone cranks it over until you get a solid stream of fuel. There may be a bleed port in the injector line that will allow you to bleed the air without cracking the lines at the injectors and making a mess, but I don't know what year and sub models they were on.
Maybe a youtube search?

Turns out my "crack Mechanic" may have been on crack and did not (fully?) open the shut off valve on the tank. We tested engines for a couple of minutes after the filter change and they were fine. Headed out the other day and engine ran for about 5 minutes and then conked. Friend of mine found this video -
- Of course, we tried priming it 4 or 5 times before he realized his error.

We did fill filters with fuel. Thanx to everyone.
