2000 396 Carver Generator Exhaust

Postby RussL » March 12th, 2021, 12:48 pm

When I had my engines serviced I also had my generator done. It is a Kohler but I don't know the specific model. the mechanic changed the raw water intake hose and said the exhaust hose also needs to be done but it goes off into an area where it is difficult to see. He wants me to have my cabinets torn our... ya... don't want to do that.... so I am hoping for same advice. There is a Centek Industries Wet Marine Exhaust box that it passes though and the 1 1/2 hose coming out is in rough shape. I can't see where it goes, and I don't know how far back I would need to get to replace it. Has anyone does this before?

You may want to check with the factory to see if there is a schematic of the exhaust system.

It's hard to tell the condition of the hose from the pics. Is it dry and cracking?
You don't want to replace the hose just for the heck of it, but also, you don't want to not replace the hose if it needs to be replaced. If the genny has never overheated, and has low hours i would really look close at the hose to see if it needs replaced.

Thanks, yes it is dry and cracked. It does need to be addressed. I looked at the manual and it is hard to tell if it is one continuous hose or if it transitions after it turns to run down the port side. Looks like a bear to get to....

It shouldn't be a hose running along side the tank. The diagram shows the hose is hooked up to a pipe (usually fiberglass) that runs along the length of the tank. There should be a length of hose from the muffler to the pipe that starts at the bow end of the tank, then a section of hose from the aft end of the pipe which looks to be aft of the bulkhead in the aft cabin to the thru-hull exhaust fitting according to the diagram. Look for the forward end of the tank and you should be able to see the hookup or at least it should be accessible after removing hardware that might be preventing you from seeing the connection point.

Thanks Viper! That was how I saw it was well. I just need to move a bunch of stuff to get there so thought I would ask before I started. I will let you all know after I am done!

Wanted to follow-up and let you know that you were correct, it is a fiberglass pipe running down the port side. Still no way to get the flex section out. We may have to cut open the floor if it needs to be replaced. I crawled around in there and it really doesn't look like it is bad to me.... do these typically need to be replaced?

The flexible wet exhaust/intake hoses do go bad in time. Cracks on the outer surface of the hose is a sign that it needs replacing before it migrates through the inner layers and starts to leak water and or exhaust fumes.
