Volvo D Series Crankcase Vent Filter

Postby Midnightsun » October 7th, 2020, 6:14 am

This unit fits the D4,D6 and D9. Corresponds to Volvo # 3584145

I have been using the Mann LC 5001X filter which is an exact replacement for the Volvo unit except it costs $29US as opposed to $90US. There is no difference whatsoever between the original and the Mann and I am convinced they are produced in the same factory.

That being said I will installing my last complete set of filters for my D6 engines and started looking for next years change, Came across this which is ridiculously priced in comparison. Advertised as a direct replacement for the Mann unit I know works perfectly. At that price I Will be ordering 8 to keep me going for 4 years. :-D

I'd stick with the Mann.
Aliexpress is usually knock off junk. Tread carefully.
Try rockauto on the Mann
Thanks

This filter is as basic as they get, after all it is a crankcase breather filter meant to trap blow by oil. Really not concerned as I would be for an oil filter. Once I have one in my hands I will compare fit with the old one and material type. Will keep all posted.

Finally got the 8 filters I ordered. Tried 1 in the boat yesterday and fit like a glove. Compared both original and Chinese knock off, honestly cannot tell the difference in size, look, and even feel of the materials used.

About 10x cheaper than the OEM Volvo unit, in fact it cost me less for 8 pieces than for 1 original Volvo.

If the link disappears with time, just look google Provent 200 filter. ;-) FYI, a Provent 200 is a widely used oil catch can which happens to use the same filter as the Volvo D series.

Midnight sun...I don’t know a lot of what these do, but you replace them every year? I have to look at my engine service schedule again (D9’s), but I don’t remember it indicating a chance that often unless very high hours.
I have replaced them once a few years ago. And yes, I was paying high full price OEM.
At this cost, it could be a no brainer unless you find some issue with them.
I will say I have noticed a small amount of oil in this area of the crankcase filter. I’m no sure if it has been from the hose clamps under the filter or maybe even the rubber gasket that comes with this filter.

I inspect those filters every year when I service. They are always rather oily so I simply swap them out each season along with the other filters except the air filter which looks really clean in general and push to 2 years. Manual says every year however conditions and engine use will determine what needs to be changed. At that price, who cares.

I ordered the crankcase filters, same source as link provided by midnight sun. They did look almost the same. They fit as well.
The only thing I noticed was the circumference of the filter was slightly smaller/skinnier. Any idea if that makes a difference?
I have D9’s.

Odd, I did not notice this and no longer have originals to compare. Regardless, a small difference in circumference of this area would not change the filters operation or capacity. More important is the sealing area where the o-ring sits which is the same and does feel the same when inserted. When you say filter I assume you are referring to the circumference of the white paper like section.
