Cams, Pistons, Etc

Postby hausherrs » July 18th, 2017, 4:01 pm

I am trying to source parts for an upcoming rebuild and im having a hard time finding stock spec parts. The cams are no longer available. And if they were I wouldnt pay the $400 they are asking.
Gen 5 454XLI

Parts I need:

1) Cam, lifters, pushrods, gears/chain
2) Pistons, stock
3) Gasket kit
4) Freeze plugs

Anyone done this before and have parts list I can take a look at?

Thanks in advance!

Steven

Steven, IMO, I would be looking for a rebuild since stock items are no longer available. For around $2K you can get a rebuilt long block with gaskets and put your outer hardware on and your done. I also believe if you can find stock your going to pay top dollar as you have already indicated and I'll bet it will cost you more than the rebuilt long block delivered. I did 02 1986 5.7L Crusaders this way for less than $5K with no core charge or return of the core. The rebuild and new vendor was in Boston, MA. Good Luck my man! Oh yea, if its the reverse rotation motor good luck, because you have to rebuild the motor installing some parts backwards.

If yo can get a complete cam card somehow, any cam grinder can grind a new cam for you.
Beware of Chinese lifters and internals!!!!

Try Jegs. The block is the same as a chevy truck for 1996. Its a 454 vortec. You can call them to verify fitment if you want to do the rebuild yourself. Every part for the 454 is still available.

Haven't had to look for one in a while but the counter rotating cam might be a little more challenging. Don't think that's something you have to worry about in your application though.
