Hinging the radar arch

Postby Sullish » July 7th, 2019, 12:45 pm

We love our 450 voyager, but she is too tall to make The Great Loop. Has anyone hinged their arch?

My brother used to have a boat with a hinged arch. I think it came that way from the factory, but not sure.
There are a few people at our marina that have their radars on a hinged mount. Just that extra foot or so is enough to get into their covered slips.

I was researching this modification for my radar mast and come across this company. It seems that they can make some modifications to their design if necessary. For instance, I told him that I would only need to step down the mast less than 5% of the time. I was concerned about movement or 'jiggle' the rest of the time. He told me that he can modify the plate and attach an extra lock down bolt. Long story short, I am going to use this guy. Price is good and he can customize. Good luck.

I used nautical creations last year to create a custom hinge plate for me. His price was very reasonable and it turned out just what I had invisioned. I have a bridge I must go under every time we go out so now I don't have to remove sat dome and anchor light. I can now just fold the one piece over and I'm done. However I am lucky that the previous owner had ordered the boat from carver and they actually hinged my arch at the factory. It's great to have if the water gets really high on the lake as it does sometimes but it's a pain to lower it cause if it's that high I also have to take down the Bimini and eisenglass

I am looking at a 460 Voyager also. A broker in Florida told me it could be done for 10k by several companies in Ft Lauderdale. Didn't give me names
BTW, I am in the great lakes and need an accurate measurement of a 450 or 460 to the arch. The eastern Erie canal only allows up to 20-foot clearance and definitely want to be able to clear that!
Carver lists it as 19'11''. I find that AWFULLY tall. Is there any way you can give me a direct measurement on your boat? Waterline to radar arch? It would be greatly appreciated.
