Taking Her Out For The First Time

Postby RGrew176 » September 1st, 2015, 11:08 pm

Tomorrow I will be taking my new to me 1981 Carver 3007 Aft Cabin out for the first time. It will be our first trip together. Heading to a rendezvous with some of my fellow boat club members. We will be anchoring out at a local anchorage area on the Detroit River just before the river enters Lake Erie.

Hoping that the weather cooperates. There is a chance of thundershowers but we have weathered them before. This is a fairly well protected anchorage. Closed on the west, south and east but open to the north. As long as the weather comes from the west or southwest we will be OK.

Will post about it most likely upon return although I will have internet capability using my smartphone as a hot spot so who knows, I could post sooner.

It is called Dunbar & Sullivan. It is south of the free bridge but it is also on the east side of Grosse Ile. The anchorage is located at the north entrance to the Livingston Channel, the downbound channel into Lake Erie exiting the Detroit River. It is on the west side of the Livingston Channel. I don't have my charts handy as they are on the boat so I am not sure if it is named on the charts. If you should ever cruise up the Livingston Channel when you exit the channel going upriver (generally north) it would be on your port side. Most evenings you will see boats anchored there and definitely on weekends during the boating season. Many spend the entire weekend there. We once had a raft of 27 boats that spent the weekend there.

I am back safe and sound from my trip. I am still learning how to handle this boat. Inboards are a lot different than I/O's. It will take me some time to learn all the nuances of inboard handling. Of course there is a lot more windage with a sedan than there is with an express.

The boat performed well. I experimented with different throttle settings and this is what I found so far. I would like other 3007 owners to assess my data. I found three throttle settings that seemed to do well. 1000 RPM gave me a nice speed of about 4.5 MPH. Then I tried 2000 RPM which gave me a speed of about 9.5 MPH and then I tried 3000/3100/3200 RPM. They gave me speeds from about 16 to 19 MPH. This seems to be the cruising speed of this particular boat.

What say ye other 3007 owners. Just for the record I am powered by twin 270 Crusaders turning twin 18" pitch 4 blade props. I need more time to play around with the throttle settings. I want to stay out of the secondaries 4bbl's if possible to keep my fuel usage reasonable.

This trip was about a 50 to 60 mile round trip, I did not chart the distance but this is my guess as to how far I travelled. I put in $300 worth of gas, 75 gallons. I used most of it. I really will not be able to get a handle on my gallons per hour or MPG until I fill the tank take a trip then fill again.

Once again based on this one trip the throttle settings I posted sounded pretty sweet. The engines were in sync and they hummed and the boat performed well.

I would like other 3007 owners or Carver owners in general to assess my data.

Thanks in advance.

If you can afford the time, your most efficient fuel burn vs speed is at hull speed, which is about 8-9 mph, and about 1900 -2000 rpm, off plane. I would guess that you would have returned to port with at least 1/2 your fuel left. That is what we experienced. We used to travel to a marina about 32 miles away, and cruise at 17 mph, at 3200 rpms on plane. We'd get home on fumes, for comparison. Due to a port engine issue, we did the same trip at 8 mph at about 1900 rpm. We arrived home with about 5/8 of our fuel and couldn't believe the savings; incredible. What used to take us about 2 3/4 hrs now takes closer to 5 , but with adequate time planning is well worth it, and runs the engines easier too. From what I've read, cruise speed gets you around .7 miles per gallon, whereas hull speed gets you closer to 1.7 miles per gallon.

Agreed. All test results show that hull speed is the most efficient. On my trip out I ran a steady 3200 RPM as I wanted to get to my destination. On my trip home I tried various throttle settings. Based on speed and performance, mainly how the engines sounded at those settings I found 1000, 2000 and 3000 to 3200 RPM to be 3 good settings. The season here is soon coming to an end so I will not have a lot of time to experiment.

I appreciate your tips.

A bit pricey to buy, fairly simple to install, I had installed a Flo-Scan in my ex-4207. The Flo-Scan that is GPS connected, with synchronizer, and all the bells and whistles.
I found that a 1 degree or two in trim tab position (I had trim-dicators as well) equated to 0.2-0.3 mpg. This is serious stuff when you are talking about a boat that gets less than 1:1. I could never have heard or sensed the dfifference in real time without the Flo-Scan.
The instrument paid for itself in a year.
Thanks

There is a Flo Scan on the boat but apparently it is not hooked up. Not sure what has to be done to complete the installation. Will have more time next season to check it out. The gauge is mounted in the instrument panel. Just need to complete the installation.

I know this is reviving an old thread, but did you ever get your Flo scan working? When I bought my boat I cruised on plane the 43 miles from Marina Del Rey to Huntington Beach, and got .75 mpg. I usually keep her slower these days and have measured 7mph at 1100 rpms over a 12 mile run. I am cautious of the "hump" in the efficiency of a planing hull.....meaning that there comes a point where you become super inefficient as your pushing a mountain of water rather that either keeping in in the water, or putting it on plane and going over the water. I'm curious if your Flo scan shows where that hump is...

I have not had a chance to look at what needs to be done to hook it up yet. Maybe this season I might get time to look it over.
