LOL, MAKE sure your Vacuflush is ON before flushing!

Postby tonyiiiafl » September 26th, 2021, 6:26 pm

Another great weekend aboard the Holodeck. This one was a pisser, excuse me. Using the aft head after breakfast (doing what one does in there after breakfast!) ANYWAY, I stepped on the peddle to flush and , well the switch was off and very little vacuum was in the tank. SO, when the valve opened, instead of going DOWN, the contents of said toilet was spewed UPWARD, splashing EVERYWHERE, including on me. Aft head got a through cleaning! Moral? ALWAYS check your vacu flush switch or things go in reverse!

So sorry I bet that was fun. I bet it will be one thing you'll never forget to do again. I don't leave mine pressurized all the time,(nothing wrong with that) but I'll turn mine on and let build vacuum and cut itself off before doing my business just to make sure of something like that happening .

Did you make sure the shower sump was turned on before you took a shower afterward? ;-)

LOL, funny to say the least. Now the question is, how does this happen? I know mine has been off a few times and basically nothing happens when you flush except it ads water, no kickbacks whatsoever. Is your vent possible blocked creating pressure in the tank?

I agree. There really shouldn't be any pressure between the vacuum reservoir and the head at all. There might be some residual vacuum, but never pressure. If the main tank was getting pressurized because of a plugged vent, then it would make sense that eventually that pressure would leak back into the vacuum reservoir and cause an issue like this.

I have another possibility. It's like an implosion, first it collapses inward then outward as pressure equalizes. The vacuum causes an inrush of air that slightly pressurizes the plumbing if you let go of the pedal right away. This usually only happens on the last flush after the pump has been turned off. Because the pump is off, in a tight system, that pressure has nowhere to go. When you open the ball, that pressure is released to equalize and can blow out any water that's in the bowl on top of the ball. I think a few conditions have to come together for it to happen but I've had it happen many times in a lot of boats though not enough to get it all over me but Tony is a special guy ;-)
