Engine room access stairs
Anybody ever repair/replace the stairs that you lift to access your engine space (in my case, forward of salon)? Mine have been pretty Frankensteined by the previous owner, and are becoming a problem so just looking for anyone who has messed with them. I'm considering just finding a carpenter to build something from scratch but I'm afraid that if I rip out the old ones I'll never get it right again.

So I'm thinking the finished rise boards were just added on, the whole thing is a mess, hinge on top is bent slightly and that's the part I'm most worried about being able to replace.

Wondering if that top trim piece is supposed to be there? Could it have been added when they redid the cabin flooring? (has that been replaced?)
Seems like the stringers on both sides aren't parallel anymore, with the one on the left ending much higher than the one on the right. Are the stairs a solid unit with the bottom step, and the the top step "wonky", or is the whole thing loose?

Starting to think little if any is original, leaning toward having a carpenter replace the whole thing. The trim piece in question was definitely added, the carpet flooring was replaced with wood grain vinyl flooring, which I like a lot, easy to keep clean. The whole thing is wonky, and a frustrating mess.

Wow, that is a mess. What were they thinking? Some people just need to stay away from woodworking tools. Some of it looks original to me but it's like they removed it, then modified it and tried to put it back in but failed miserably. Whatever you do, ditch the step pads, there are so many nicer options out there if you don't want wood steps to be slippery. I have a short set of varnished stairs at home that are pretty slick so I got a roll of clear non-skid film that you peel and stick on the stairs. It's about 6" wide and you apply it only on the leading surface of each step. Got it from Amazon, works great and isn't so obvious. You can do the same thing from scratch by mixing a non-skid product into the varnish when you refinish the wood. Keep us posted.
