Fresh Water Tank Gauge Not Working

Postby mjk1040 » March 1st, 2016, 6:01 am

:help: 1998 Carver 355 MY, my fresh water gauge in the galley does not register the water level in the tank. Always empty.
Checked the DC voltages on both the sender the gauge and all points read pretty much the same on both. Voltage in and out at both ends. Pretty sure wired correctly, if I turn off the breaker for this unit I believe the gauge floated up, as soon as I turn the power back on it went to empty. Any Ideas, sender unit? Gauge? Though someone would have run into this and could advise. Thanks!

Short out the sender wire at the sender to ground and see if it pegs the needle. If it does, the gauge is working and the sender is faulty.

Can almost always bet on the sender. Depending on the corrosion or the softness/hardness of your water, you may be able to clean it up.

X3 on the sender. If you get a new one, go with a Wema sender if you have the room to get it inside the tank. The Wemas are much more reliable than the lever-type senders. They use the same mount and have the same connections, but you need to order the correct length for your tank depth. Just measure your tank depth and order the corresponding sender length.

Since you have it out, drop it into a bucket of CLR and let it sit overnight. Worst case nothing changes, best case it works perfectly or minimum you have a backup.

Well you all were right on the money, it must have been the sender, it started working again on its own when I re-commissioned her this spring. Maybe the RV anti-freeze descaled it over the winter? It ain't broke, don't fix it! We'll see if it works all season? Feels good to have her on the water again. Mike

Water tank is under the master berth. Lift the mattress to revel the hatch for the bilge. The tank should be the large plastic white one, and the sending unit is in top and has two wires going to it.
