Looking at purchasing a 2002 406. The 6BTA 5.9 370s have 1300 hours and the Kohler generator has just over 800. About the only wart I could find on our walkthrough was a soft spot on the swim platform. Seems an easy enough fix by drilling a few holes, letting it dry out, and filling with hardener.

The engine room was spotless, not a sign of a leak anywhere. Any known issues we should be aware of, other things to look for?

Hi welcome. I have a 405 which is model year different but same boat. I think the 405/406 was a really good design with lots of interior room and good engine room access. I will give some advice for the swimplatform. You can also use the search forum on here and also google this problem. The boats that came with oem Carver dock box have this problem and the ones that don't can see this at the grab handle on the deck. These penetrations are not sealed and water will get in the core and rot the swimplatform .YOU MUST STOP THIS. boats with the dock box I will recommend removing it and checking its mounting holes by probing around with a coat hanger etc. Most likely you will find water intrusion. If your lucky it won't be bad. I was and I over drilled my holes filled them with epoxy and recounted and sealed the dock box. If you find none I would consider doing this anyway since the dock box will be off and you will never have to worry about it. I also had some rot around the grab handle and was able to dig out and pack in some thickened epoxy there also. I contribute my luck to the boat being in a covered slip with not alot of use in rainy weather. There have been others who have had to cut out the entire or large sections of the top skin and replace most of the core do to water intrusion. This needs to be checked carefully so you know what you are purchasing. Also the aft tanks need to checked for any corrosion and they should be in service and not be empty so you'll know they are in good condition. Several posts of these style aft cabins (355/356 ,405/406)having had issues with the aft tanks. We love our 405 have had it going about 13yrs now. We spend most of our time between spring to fall on her and being in TN even a few days in winter. Let me know if I can answer questions. I'd be happy to help.
