installing a generator

Postby scoobychonx » November 11th, 2015, 5:12 am

Hi I'm installing a cummings onan 11kw genset in my carver 3608. I've noticed a spare sea cock blanked on port side which I presume is for the raw water intake I am wondering did the generator have its own exhaust outlet through the hull via a skin fitting or through one of the existing exhausts. Any info or pictures would be appreciated. Regards lee

It should have it's own exhaust and not be tied into an existing one.

I did my own install on my previous boat. As recommended, do the under water exhaust. This is what I used and was very satisfied. http://www.centekindustries.com/gen-sep.html

I would not have under water exhaust only. It'll be tricky to know if you're getting enough raw water through the system. How will you easily know if there is a restriction on the intake (weeds, plastic bag, etc)?

My boat has the ability to send the exhaust under water or out the port side and I never use the underwater as I'm always looking at the water flow. But I'm in an area where we get the grass weeds in the water and a couple of hours clogs up the outside thru hull fitting, not the strainer.

Don't rely on the generator shutting down because if it doesn't it may overheat to the point of damage to the motor.

Put one of these on the exhaust hose. It'll let you know you're not pumping water before the engine sensors shut the engine down, and before your engine temp gauge indicates a high reading. This is one of the projects on my list for the genny and engines. It's a good system for everyone to have on board, and it's a relatively easy install.

Yea those are good. I use the borel ones on the mains, just haven't got around to putting one on the generator yet.

Same concept as aqualarm...
