Hi, In need of some advice. Last week my 1983 3207 arrived here in Fl. after being transported down from Ct. Unfortunately due to the height of the boat and the low clearance of bridges in the northeast , the bridge surround had to be removed and stowed on the foredeck. I am now ready to begin reattaching everything and want to be sure it's done correctly. To that end what sealant would be best for the screws that secure it to the deck? And as there was old sealant/caulk all around the base where the surround meet the deck what would be best to use so as to have a good , watertight seal? And should it be sealed after the surround is attached or put a bead along the deck and then lower the surround into place and seal again along the exposed exterior. I've seen a few different marine sillicone sealants on line but was wondering if anyone had ever done something similiar. Thanks in advance for any suggestions/advice. Matt.

I've always been a big fan of butyl tape (aka Bed-It tape) for situations like this, as well as for the screws. I'll post a couple of links so you can do your own due diligence. ;-)

Here is a big discussion about how to properly use it:

And Here is the link where you can buy it:

I have no affiliation with this product or website or anything else. :-D I just like the way it works and it's SO much easier to clean up than silicone. I still use silicone for certain applications, but if it involves rebedding anything - I always grab the butyl tape. YMMV :-D

Good article Kyle, I've been recommending butyl tape for years. I've used it for a long time and is my preferred method, you just need to know how to apply it properly, the article does a pretty good job of explaining that.

If you use butyl tape on the mating surfaces but caulking to cover the outside joints for esthetics, use a product that is UV rated like Sikaflex 295 UV or 3M 4000 UV or 3M 3000 UV, I'm sure there are others.

When I was working at the marine shop, we sold a ton of 3M 4000 & 4200. Never a single complaint, and we had some ornery clients. While the 4000 series is excellent, it is not permanent seal similar to the 5200. Stick with the 4000 series if you choose that 3M line. Good luck! 8-) er
