VHF replacement on C 40

Does anyone have experience with removal/replacement of a VHF radio on a C 40? The radio is mounted in a glass panel on top of the helm. There is no access underneath nor behind. The best I can figure, the caulk has to be removed to take the panel off. From the Standard Horizon user manual, the mounting bracket can only be loosened from behind.

What model Standard Horizon VHF do you have?

I looked up the manual of your model and you definitely need to get to the back to remove the VHF. It looks like a chartplotter right beside it so I suggest you remove that to give you a large access hole to be able to reach the 2 screws behind the VHF. That is how I would do it. ;-)

This shows how it is mounted. As you can see it gets sandwiched by a screw head on each bracket. Probably best to remove those brackets and the unit will fall out.

Welcome the forum by the way. :captain2:

Thanks! I briefly tried to remove the chart plotter but didn’t have my owners manual on board. I’ll try that next.

The trim around the plotter prys off exposing a screw in each corner. Remove those and the plotter lifts out. ;-) Do check your manual though as they may have changed things on your model.

The trick will be if the screw is actually a bolt with a nut on the back.

Right you are. When I mounted mine I used a non nut screw just for this purpose. Forgot it came with nuts which I thought was dumb but I guess it is there to deter theft. Now you all know I have no nuts. :-D
