2000 396 AC - air conditioner not draining

Postby tgebler » August 13th, 2019, 9:39 am

The air conditioner in the salon is not draining properly and, as a result, we are getting water on the nearby carpet. Also, there is an odor when the AC is running which I assume is related to the lack of proper drainage.

Any suggestions to resolve the problems would be appreciated. I am not sure how to access the air conditioner.

Thanks.

if you don't know how to access it, I'm guessing you haven't cleaned the coil or the drain pan.
Start by locating the unit. You should be able to hear it run and dig in to find it.
Then clean the coil, and drain pan and drain line. Also it drains into the shower sump. You most likely need to locate, open and clean it as well. There is also the possibility that the water is coming from the raw water to the a/c unit.
Again, you need to find it and see what's going on.

Yes, tomschauer is right. Your drain pan is probably full of really skanky water causing the smell. Your water problem may be as simple as a plugged drain line going to the sump. Try flushing your drain line and if you haven't done it lately, clean out your sump.

If it's located the same as our 355, your going to have to remove the galley seating against the head to gain workable access space. If there's a hatch under the galley table you should be able to see the unit.

Pretty sure the 355/356 is completely different from the 396.

Thanks for the responses. The 396 is different.

I actually know the location of the unit but the access is a small panel in the corner of the salon which is the air intake.

When I remove that grate, I can see the unit but the pan access and drain line are on the outboard side of the unit and inaccessible from the grate area. I am think about trying to remove the framing around the grate access.

Also, I have already cleaned the sump and replaced the float switch and pump.

Any other thoughts?

On my 390 CPMY there was an odor, I traced it to a dirty shower sump pump. Cleaned it up and all was good.

There has to be an access point other than the air return. An opening underneath a bed, underneath a seat cushion, underneath carpeting, behind a cabinet, etc.

On my 356, I have one unit beneath my aft berth and the other underneath my dinette seat. Both have decent size access panels.

buster 53,

I am still looking for that access but if I find it I will post it. If any other 396 owners can direct me, I would appreciate it.

I'm assuming you do not have an owner's manual that may show where your access is. When I bought my 356 March a year ago, I found a manual online since my boat didn't come with one. Remember, Google is your friend...use it often.
