405 salon A/C unit

The unit behind the salon couch seems to be installed wrong as it is impossible to clean the filter and coils since they are facing the outside of the boat. No room or way that I can figure out how to clean as I do not want to damage the coils. Anyone else have a similar situation? My friends suggestion is to remove the unit and turn it around but this will involve redoing duct work and plumbing....appreciate any advice or suggestions.

You could install a lint filter just inside the return grill. That would take care of most of the problem, and make it easier to clean/replace. If you're return grill is screwed in, you could also add some hinges to it to make it easier to service. You do have to get to the whole unit once in a (long) while to clean the evaporator though.

They typically ARE installed so that the return air cycles around the unit before it gets sucked into the evaporator. This is done to provide some additional cooling for the compressor.

Yes on my 405 it's oriented the same way. The way km1125 said is correct about airflow. I have in the past just unscrewed the mounting and rotated cleaned coils and put it back. A filter on the return can help but the more important thing I did on my 495 is seal off the best I could the hvac units from pulling air from the bilges epically the fwd one. If you'll seal around the area it will make a big difference in efficiency and any bilge smell it pulls in from the bilge

I appreciate the replies and information. I definitely need to pull it out and clean because I took a pic with my phone and there is a lot of build up.
