House bank charging

Postby Mkmohn » July 9th, 2020, 10:45 pm

We have a new to us 2000 396. The house batteries appear to have been depleted....no interior lights are working, they were on then dimmed over time and now nothing. All of this happened in the couple of hours it took me to purchase and then run the shore power cords.
Can someone tell me where the battery chargers are located...id like to get a look at them, their breaker switches are on....so one of them should be charging the house batteries should they?
The boat is so new to me that I’m wondering if it’s operator error, or bad batteries, or a bad charger....what do you all think? Thank you for any advice!

Not trying to be smart but did you look and verify you have power on the main power ac meters in the panel? Main breakers switched off etc?hopefully someone with your model can chime in but may be time to grab a flashlight on go hunting.

Thanks Admiral, I did check that. The Air conditioners are working, that covers one panel and the fridge is working, that covers the other panel....both breakers are on.

Ok, those are the main breakers, but you also have sub breakers and most likely you have one marked just for the battery charger. Is it on? Even if you have dead batteries, if your charger is on, you should be able to at least have lights.

Your charger should be located at the center floor hatch toward the aft of the boat. most likely you will not be able to see the charger panel do to the way its mounted, you may have to use a mirror.

Mkmohn,
I realized it's fixed but.....
Just out of curiosity what position is your battery selector dial on? 1, 2, or all?

Any properly wired battery charger should charge regardless of the battery selector.....having said that , the engine/engines should only charge the batteries that are selected by the switch position.

If that is what you are thinking....Lclifton..... :-D
FWIW.....The above is just my opinion.

Did the mechanic check the batteries capacity after the fix. Sometimes, when you drain batts all the way down, they are damaged enough that they will not hold a charge for long. You would be surprised how many times those batt wires are connected wrong at the selector switch. Either from Carver or from previous owner trying to "fix" something. 8-) er
