I have a 2000 396 Aft Cabin. The windlass is running very slowly and to get it to work I have to turn off all other electrical devices. Could I need a new battery and, if so, which battery is sending power to the Maxwell Freedom 800 windlass? Help!!

Not sure of wiring, maybe the house battery....but the question, do you have the engines running when you operate the windlass ?

If you check the batteries separately with a voltmeter as the windlass is operated ( you will see a volt drop ) you should find the battery it is wired to in my opinion. Also check all your battery connections for corrosion and loose connectors etc.

Thanks. There are six batteries so I will need to check each one. And I do have the engines running when operating the windlass.

Also check the power cable connections at the windless motor.
May want to check there first.

So..... I checked the batteries, all better than 12v and checked all the connections and no problems there. Is it possible I need a new windlass motor? Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

When you say better than 12volts....how much....because a fully charged battery should be around 12.7 volts after the surface charge is gone.

My multimeter shows over 13 volts. any thoughts?

Will is the best!!! I just him an email and he called me with in 15 minutes. He gave me several things to check and explained electrical service to a novice. If anyone has a windlass issue, reach out to him first. Thanks for the referral.
